This training has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Early Education and Workforce Officer, Aneesa Younus, for the attention of all early years staff who have responsibility for overseeing recruitment processes within their setting and the management of staff.
This Training Workshop will take place online in 2 parts and it is recommended you attend both parts to complete the training. There are 2 time slots available to enable settings the flexibility to attend. You can book to attend the afternoon session which will take place at 2.00pm - 3.30pm or the evening session from 6.30pm - 8.00pm.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is a service that helps employers in England, Wales make safer recruitment decisions by checking and certifying whether individuals are suitable to work with vulnerable groups, including children. Kelly Matthews the DBS Regional Outreach Adviser for the South East will be hosting two workshops to support staff responsible for making safer recruitment decisions within their organisations.
Part 1 : Eligibility Workshop
An employer may request a DBS check as part of their recruitment process (previously known as CRB checks). DBS checks assist employers in making safer recruitment and licensing decisions, and forms part of the wider safer recruitment practice. These checks are processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). For certain roles, the check will also include information held on the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists, alongside any information held by local police forces, that is considered relevant to the applied-for post.
This workshop will explore the different levels of DBS checks, when an employee is eligible for a check, what regulated activity is and how the DBS Update Service could benefit you and your employees.

Part 2: Legal Duty to Refer
The DBS (Disclosure and Barring service) aims to protect the public by helping employers make safer recruitment decisions, and barring individuals who pose a risk to vulnerable groups from working in certain roles. Regulated activity providers (employers or volunteer managers of people working in regulated activity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and personnel suppliers have a legal duty to refer to the DBS where certain conditions are met.
This workshop will look at the different routes through which the DBS may receive a barring referral, when a barring referral should be made to the DBS, including when the legal duty to refer is met, how to make a good quality referral, and the consequences of not making appropriate barring referrals.
