Be Internet Citizens

This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Prevent Education Officer, Rabena Sharif, for the attention of all secondary schools.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue, in partnership with YouTube, would like to invite you to join our free teacher trainings on the brand-new Be Internet Citizens digital citizenship curriculum on:

  • Friday 26 March 2021 at 9:00-11:00
  • Tuesday 30 March 2021 at 16:00-19:00

These interactive webinars will equip teachers with the context, tools, and materials to deliver the PSHE Association-accredited curriculum to students age 13+. As well as receiving a free copy of the resource and accompanying PPT, participants will be guided through key concepts and activities by our team of expert facilitators, and leave the session empowered to develop their students’ media literacy, critical thinking and digital citizenship skills.

Numbers for each session will be limited to allow space for discussion and questions, so we encourage early registration via Eventbrite below! If you cannot make either of these dates do not fear, another training will be offered after the Easter holidays - please email jp@isdglobal.org with any queries, or to pre-register interest for yourself or a group of colleagues.

Be Internet Citizens is the UK's leading digital citizenship programme for schools, designed to support young people online by providing them with the vital knowledge and skills needed to become positive contributors to the digital world. The newly updated curriculum covers a range of topics that speak to the realities of digital use in 2021, including:

  • Identifying disinformation and misinformation (including clickbait, conspiracy theories, and ‘deep fake’ videos)
  • Understanding bias and how it can influence our opinions or perspectives on social issues
  • Analysing 'us vs them' narratives, and how online echo chambers may widen social divides
  • Responding effectively to hate speech, and forging more inclusive digital communities
  • Creating inspiring digital content to champion causes, promote positive messages and support peers.

The programme's cutting-edge resources have been used by thousands of educators for the past four years, and have reached over an estimated 60,000 teenagers across the UK. The lessons not only provide these young people with an engaging and informative approach to understanding the critical issues they face online, but support schools to meet their statutory Relationships and Sex Education requirements, and fulfil the Prevent Duty. Taking part qualifies as Continuing Professional Development for all practitioners.

"[Be Internet Citizens] really gives [young people] the skills to thrive on and offline in their daily lives."
