The Children’s Society has published its annual report examining children’s wellbeing in the UK. The report looks at the latest figures and trends in children’s subjective wellbeing based on survey data, peer consultations with children and young people, and consultations with professionals across the children’s sector. Findings indicate that children’s happiness with their life as a whole has declined, with average happiness scores significantly lower in 2022/23 than when the survey started in 2009/10. There has also been a steep decline in children’s average happiness related to school and schoolwork. Policy recommendations include calls for more programmes tackling gender stereotypes; whole-school approaches to wellbeing; and restoring and expanding youth services.
