This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Curve Programme Development Officer, Dayna White, for the attention of Secondary School Headteachers, Heads of Drama, Pastoral Care/Equalities Officer, Citizenship/PSHE Leads, Heads of Year 10, 11 and Sixth Forms.
Following a successful showing of ‘For a Black Girl’ as part of Slough’s Black History Month 2018 celebrations at The Curve, the theatre company are putting together a bid for Arts Council England to support a secondary schools tour of the show. This Is It Theatre have got in touch to see if any Slough secondary schools would be interested in having the show. The show is suitable for young people aged 15 and over so would be great for GCSE/A-level students.
If you are interested in exploring this opportunity please email dayna.white@slough.gov.uk. It would be brilliant to have a little Slough tour for as many of our young people to see the show as possible. For more information about the show please see below and check out their social media @ForaBlackGirlUK on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram:
“Racism and sexism don’t exist,” a friend says one day. He is adamant. “They can’t do. Especially not in the UK.”
Part autobiographical, part verbatim, For a Black Girl is our response. With two actors, one movement ensemble and over 45 characters, we will show you:
- A courtroom and an unforgettable trial
- A game of Ghettopoly
- A homeless lady questioning the future
- One man’s story of going bra-less
- A comprehensive guide of what NOT to do during Never Have I Ever
But ultimately it is up to you to answer the question: do all stomachs matter?
“A vital and vibrant two-hander that scrutinises racism and sexism” – ★★★★
For a Black Girl explores female sexuality, violence and the staggering effect of everyday racism. Join us as we uncover the ugly truths behind court rooms, classrooms and bedrooms, in this candid exploration of the Black British experience.
