Free Novels that Shaped Our World Creative Workshops for Schools

This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Children, Young People and Outreach Manager Alison Beer, for the attention of Secondary Schools.

Slough Libraries and Culture Service is offering funded workshops to schools, as part of the BBC's Novels That Shaped Our World project. Supported by Arts Council England, Libraries Connected and BBC Arts, this is a national project celebrating 300 years of the novel and aims to encourage and inspire an enjoyment of reading and libraries amongst new and diverse audiences.

Using the book Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman as inspiration, we are working with local artists to deliver free Novel Voices workshops to secondary school students to discuss the themes of the novel, encourage them to engage with the text and produce a creative response to it. Schools can choose from a variety of media for the workshops: visual art, music, creative writing, dance or animation. The workshops can take place during existing lessons, such as English and PSHE and can be delivered virtually, or in person, depending on the pandemic situation. A limited number of workshops will be available and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Schools will need to apply by 20th December. Full workshop details are available from the contact below.

All the participating young people will have the chance to share their work at a showcase event on the evening of 25th February, which is likely to be held as an online event, hosted by Slough Libraries and Culture. Participants will be required to provide some feedback on the project and allow us to share their work with our funders. We will offer more guidance on this once you have signed up. There will also be the opportunity for students’ work to appear in the national celebration in June, hosted by BBC Arts and Libraries Connected.
