Questions address a range of issues relevant to general wellbeing, including lifestyle and school life. Factors assessed by the survey include mental wellbeing, anxiety, indicators of vulnerability, sleep patterns, online safety, protective factors (such as exercise and healthy eating), and attitudes to accessing mental health support.

The survey is a collaboration between young people, schools, the NHS, and the OxWell Study Team at the University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry.

OxWell aims to better understand the mental health and well-being of school students by:

  • Asking about their worries and how they might like to receive support.
  • Providing schools and services with information about what young people want.
  • Supporting positive change by providing insights into young people’s lives and experiences.

Building on the data collected in 2019 and 2020, significant progress has been made over the past year, particularly in further expanding the survey’s reach. In 2021, over 30,000 students from 180 schools in four English counties participated, offering localised knowledge about the experiences of young people. The research generated by the survey is now being used at a national, local, and school level to help provide valuable insights into what students need, which factors influence their wellbeing and how they would like to access help if they have mental health difficulties.

All schools that take part get their own reports, so the data is there at a school level.  The survey includes validated measures of mental health and well-being, risk and protective factors, and care-seeking behaviour and preferences. As we know this is key info to help with Improving our understanding of the broad range of social, emotional and behavioural factors that contribute to mental health outcomes.

Plus, the survey is massively giving young people more of a voice as its direct insights from them.
