Water Safety Awareness

This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Jatinder Matharu, Education Safeguarding Professional on behalf of Slough Borough Council's Principal Risk and Exploitation Partnership Officer Helen Buckland. This is for the attention of all schools.

Please share these vital water safety message with your students as the warmer weather and the holidays are almost upon us. There is one for primary and the ‘One last swim’ is aimed at secondary schools.

Although Slough is landlocked and the Thames is nearby, it is the Jubilee River that is within walkable distance from the town centre which has claimed a number of lives, particularly young men.

Between 20th May and 1st June 2021, 7 people died (in a 2 month period) in UK waterways; 2 were in Berkshire and only one was over the age of 16.

We are conscious that many children are at home, the weather is good and water play will increase during summer months.

The RBFRS has also launched a water Safety package which have great resources which can be accessed here.

If you can use these resources before the end of term to reinforce the message that would be great. If not, Neil from RBFRS is happy to come and do an assembly before the end of term if that would be helpful.

You can contact  Neil Whiteman, Safety Education Coordinator by calling 07827 230 742 or you can email whitemann@rbfrs.co.uk.

The attached leaflet was produced specifically with the Jubilee River in mind, but which also gives advice for parents.  We would appreciate it if you could share these resources via your social media and school newsletters in the run up to the end of term.
