This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Prevent Manager, Naheem Bashir, for the attention of Headteachers in Slough Secondary Schools.
An opportunity has arisen in Slough for 16-18 year olds, boys and girls from your school to participate in the 'Young People's Leadership and Safety Champions’ programme, a course carefully designed to teach students about some of the most topical issues that may affect them.
This project has been made available to Slough Borough Council in partnership with Aurety for young people to participate in. The project will commence in October and will take place during term time. Similar projects have proved successful with young people during 2016/17 and 2017/18. Following a gap over the past 12 months I am delighted to announce the opportunity again for the forthcoming academic year.
Aurety Director and Trainer, Javeria Coleridge is an ex-Police Sergeant who has over 13 years experience of working with young people, schools and parents across the country and in some of the most challenging environments abroad.
Javeria’s training sessions are set in a safe space where sensitive subjects are discussed and students are encouraged to express their views, listen to others and are taught to apply critical thinking. Some of the topics that are covered are:
- Extremism (in all of its forms)
- Radicalisation,
- Terrorism,
- Hate Crime,
- Internet Safety,
- The role of the Government (local and national),
- The Police and independent support agencies.
Students debate current global issues that impact young people in Britain, the role media plays and what can be done to build resilience. The programme also includes sessions on leadership skills providing students with the ability to understand, identify and overcome social and cultural barriers which may hold them back from achieving their full potential. Students then work together to develop and deliver a project which will enable them to pass on learning to their peers and raise awareness.
Each school and student is awarded with a certificate upon completion of the course at a Graduation Ceremony held at Portcullis House hosted by the local MP. The course runs for 11 weeks, once a week for one and a half hours and during term time. Students will attend a local venue and refreshments are provided.
This is a unique opportunity for young people to gain leadership skills, be part of local, national and international debate and make new friends in a safe and encouraging environment.
