Neglect Practitioner Tool Consultation

This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Education Safeguarding Officer Jatinder Matharu, for the attention of professionals working with children, young people and families.

The Safeguarding Partnership has been reflecting on feedback received from Neglect screening tool evaluation.

The feedback provoked the idea that we need to further clarify our expectations for parents and reposition ourselves to increase transparency and provide a proactive approach when working with families. The Safeguarding Partnership team have developed the neglect practitioner tool (attached) with partners to include the UN Convention of Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It aims to be a more user friendly and child centred focussed tool to help schools and other agencies to articulate concerns when referring cases of neglect.

It will not replace but enhance existing neglect tools found here.

Please feedback your thoughts on:

  1. Do you think the attached tool would be useful?
  2. Would and could you use it with parents to help highlight your concerns in a discussion?
  3. Should it be a standalone tool or linked to the existing neglect screening tool?
  4. Would you add or change any of the content in the document?
