Sport in Mind - Slough Mum, Baby & Toddler Programme

This article has been brought to you by Slough Borough Council's Senior Childrens Centres Operations Officer, Sue Butterworth on behalf of Sport in Mind for the attention of all Early Years and childcare practitioners.

The programme aims to support more women access sport and physical activity opportunities in order to support their mental wellbeing. Being a new parent can be a challenging time, and the most common health problem after a woman has had a baby is a mental health problem, with 1 in 5 women experiencing either depression or anxiety. Add to this the fact that the most likely time in anyone’s life for having a severe mental health problem is the first few weeks after birth and you can see why the emotional wellbeing of new mums is so vital as it can have such a devasting effect on the mother and their families. With a strong link between maternal mental health and children’s mental health, providing physical activity and social opportunities and wellbeing support provides an essential programme to support new mums and parents.

The sessions will be for all abilities and level of activity and will provide a safe and supportive environment for the group. Delivered across multiple venues in Slough Sport in Mind hope to support as many families as they can. The sessions are free and open to mums and parents who are experiencing mental health problems, low mood, social isolation or poor mental wellbeing due to a lack of support.

Attached is the timetable, as well as the poster for each of the four sessions. All of the information is also available on the Sport in Mind website, with the Slough Timetable on the Mum & Baby page and further details of each session can be found using our Activity Map - just type in Slough to the search box and the Mum and Baby sessions will appear in the list of sessions below the map to click on.
