The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) has published two new reports based on its annual Children, violence and vulnerability research. The YEF surveyed over 10,000 13- to 17-year-olds in England and Wales about their experiences of violence. The first report looks at who is affected by violence. Findings include: 20% of the young people surveyed reported being a victim of violence in the past 12 months; 10% said that they had missed school due to fears of violence; and those who were persistently absent, suspended, excluded or attending alternative education settings were more likely to be victims of violence and to engage in violent behaviour compared to their peers. The second report looks at the impact of social media on violence affecting young people. Findings include: violence is widespread on social media; 80% of 13- to 17-year-olds who reported seeing weapons on social media said it made them feel less safe in their local area; and 43% of children who reported being a victim of violence, agreed that phone use should be banned in school at breaktimes.
